Turkey Sweet Potato Chili (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ Base Ingredients

01 - 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
02 - 1/2 medium yellow onion, diced
03 - 4 fresh garlic cloves, finely minced
04 - 1 pound lean ground turkey

→ Liquid & Vegetables

05 - 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
06 - 1 (28 oz) can fire-roasted diced tomatoes, with all juices
07 - 1 (14 oz) can red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
08 - 1 pound sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes

→ Spices & Seasonings

09 - 2 tablespoons chili powder
10 - 1 teaspoon ground cumin
11 - 1 teaspoon paprika
12 - 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
13 - Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

→ Optional Toppings

14 - Shredded sharp cheddar cheese
15 - Fresh cilantro leaves
16 - Ripe avocado slices
17 - Sour cream or Greek yogurt
18 - Thinly sliced green onions

# Instructions:

01 - Heat the olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed soup pot over medium-high heat. Add the diced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes until it becomes translucent and fragrant.
02 - Add the minced garlic and ground turkey to the pot. Break up the meat with a wooden spoon and cook, stirring frequently, for about 5 minutes until the turkey is no longer pink on the outside.
03 - Stir in the chicken broth, fire-roasted tomatoes with their juices, drained kidney beans, cubed sweet potatoes, chili powder, cumin, paprika, and cayenne pepper if using. Mix everything together well.
04 - Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over high heat. Once bubbling, reduce heat to medium and partially cover the pot, leaving the lid slightly ajar. Let it simmer for 15-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender.
05 - Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed. Ladle into bowls and top with your favorite garnishes like cheese, cilantro, avocado, or a dollop of sour cream.

# Notes:

01 - Sweet potato sizes can vary significantly, so it's best to go by weight rather than quantity. Look for about 1 pound total.
02 - You can substitute hot paprika or smoked paprika for regular paprika to add different flavor profiles.
03 - This recipe is quite forgiving - feel free to adjust the amounts of turkey, sweet potatoes, and spices to match your preferences.
04 - This hearty chili makes excellent leftovers and can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
