Heat the vegetable oil in a large non-stick sauté pan over medium heat. Once the oil begins to shimmer, add your chopped onions along with the sugar and a generous pinch of salt. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until the onions turn a beautiful golden-brown color and become wonderfully caramelized - this process takes about 30 minutes and is absolutely worth the wait.

Remove the caramelized onions from heat and set them aside to cool completely. This cooling step is important to prevent the sour cream from warming up when you mix everything together.

In a medium mixing bowl, gently combine the sour cream, soy sauce, garlic powder, half a teaspoon of freshly ground pepper, and your cooled caramelized onions. Stir everything together until well blended and creamy.
